HOW WE ARRIVED AT AGING HEROES/PANAMA

Aging Heroes did not begin as a nonprofit organization. It began with a lifelong belief that people deserve opportunities to grow, heal, connect, and live meaningful lives.

For years, Erica and Rusty Harrison have been involved in charitable and community-focused work in North Carolina, serving on nonprofit boards, volunteering their time, supporting local causes, and helping individuals build resilience and well-being through education and personal development. Their professional backgrounds in healthcare leadership, education, counseling, strengths development, and positive psychology naturally shaped the foundation of Aging Heroes.

Travel deepened that perspective.

During a trip to Tanzania, where Erica participated in the Mt. Kilimanjaro Marathon, they encountered extraordinary local runners training with worn-out shoes and limited equipment. They also visited the Upendo Orphanage, where they witnessed both tremendous need and remarkable resilience. The experience stayed with them long after they returned home.

Rather than letting the experience fade into memory, Erica organized a charitable effort to send financial support to the orphanage and running gear to athletes in need. It became one of many moments that reinforced a growing conviction: meaningful change often begins through small acts of connection, dignity, and service.

Over the years, Erica and Rusty traveled extensively throughout Latin America and developed a deep appreciation for the diversity, warmth, and strength of the communities they encountered. But Bocas del Toro, Panama, affected them in a different way.

Beyond its natural beauty, they were deeply moved by the generosity and sense of community they found among people often living with limited resources. The spirit of the region challenged many assumptions about happiness, success, and what truly creates a meaningful life.

As they learned more about local community efforts in Bocas del Toro, including the work of Give and Surf, a new vision began to emerge.

At the time, Erica and Rusty were already building Aging Heroes as a small business focused on resilience, positive psychology, intentional living, and emotional well-being through writing, workshops, coaching, and educational media. As retirement approached, they began asking a larger question:

What if Aging Heroes could evolve into something that not only helped individuals grow, but also created meaningful community impact?

That question became the foundation for Aging Heroes, Inc..

Today, Aging Heroes is transitioning into an education-centered nonprofit organization focused on resilience, strengths development, well-being, life skills, and intentional living. Through structured educational programming, immersive learning experiences, digital resources, and collaborative community partnerships, the organization seeks to create opportunities for growth while supporting underserved communities with dignity and respect.

This work is not a sudden change in direction. It is the continuation of values that have shaped Erica and Rusty’s personal and professional lives for decades.

Aging Heroes exists because they believe meaningful lives are built through learning, connection, service, resilience, and community. The road to Panama simply helped clarify what that mission could become.
